Background

Built by Revolutionary Engineering Developments (RED), for Ford Motorsport Division the Escort Mk3 1600i was specifically designed for Group A rallying and showcased exceptional engineering and performance.

Powered by a 1.6-liter CVH engine. The rally-prepared car was significantly modified from the standard model, producing approximately 140bhp compared to the standard RS1600i’s 115 bhp. Key enhancements included a Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system which optimized fuel delivery and increased power output. The car’s suspension was also upgraded with Bilstein dampers and reinforced components, allowing it to handle the demanding and varied terrains encountered in rally stages.

In 1983 Aitken-Walker was part of a talented Ford rally team that included notable drivers like Malcolm Wilson and Mark Lovell. This strong lineup helped Ford maintain a competitive edge in various events throughout the season. Additionally, in the Circuit of Ireland Rally  she delivered an outstanding performance, finishing  7th overall and securing  1st in class  This victory underscored her ability to compete effectively against formidable opponents and showcased the capabilities of the RS1600i.

Despite facing stiff competition and challenging rally stages, Aitken-Walker’s performances throughout the season established her as a prominent figure in rallying, especially as a female driver excelling in a male-dominated sport.
