The VW Mk2 Golf GTI was homologated for WRC Group A in 1986 and rallied by the works team until the1990 season. Initially driven by Kenneth Eriksson and later by Erwin Weber and Stig Blomqvist. Success came, with a number of 1st in Class, in the 1987 and 88 seasons. Works cars ran a naturally aspirated multi point injection16v engine producing 195 Hp at 7200rpm and proved competitive against more powerful opposition.
This car
The car was originally built in 1993 by Southern Car Club member Colin Billings as a Grp N car but later upgraded to Grp A specification. It was further upgraded with sequential transmission and throttle bodies among other performance improvements during his ownership.
The car competed regularly in the British Tarmac Championship and National rally events until 2006 when it remained garaged until the current owner acquired and recommissioned it.
